The cosmetics market is flooded with products that claim to turn back the clock, restore your skin to a glowy finish, or help you rediscover your face without those tired under eye circles. But sadly, few are actually able to follow through on their promises.

So many factors affect the way your skin may be looking today. If you live in or near a big city, pollution may be dousing your skin with chemicals every day. Perhaps as a teen you spent far too much time in the sun and far too little time applying sunscreen. Maybe despite your best efforts, your body has simply slowed the production of collagen as you’ve aged, and your skin is swiftly losing elasticity and gaining wrinkles faster than you can count them!

If you are weary of pulling products off of the shelf, only to have your wrinkles or sags stubbornly outlast your bottle of cream, a facelift may be the right choice for you.

What is a Facelift, Anyway?

A facelift, also called a rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgery that both lifts and tightens facial tissues that are otherwise causing wrinkles and sagging skin. A facelift can combat excessive skin, and smooth wrinkles or folds. It doesn’t usually include a brow or eye lift, although these procedures can be considered in addition to a standard facelift if you desire, or your doctor recommends.

A facelift generally focuses on the bottom two-thirds of the face, and occasionally the neck. During your facelift surgery, your doctor will rearrange fat and tissues beneath the skin to contour your face and give it the shape you are hoping to achieve.

What Happens During a Facelift Surgery?

During a facelift surgery, your doctor will make an incision near the hairline, along the temples. The incision will follow the ear line and go around the ear and down to the bottom of the scalp behind the ear. Fat cells and excess skin folds will be removed, or reintegrated to different parts of the face. The muscles and connective tissues underneath the skin will be tightened up, or have their tautness redirected. If there is not enough fat or skin needing to be dealt with, your doctor may encourage you to go for a mini-facelift, rather than a full face lift.

If a neck lift is being done at the same time, the same protocol will be followed in the neck and chin area. The skin under the chin and on the neck will be tightened and pulled back.

Once your doctor has removed all the excess, and your face and neck are beautifully contoured and slim once more, you will receive either dissolvible stiches or skin glue. Depending on your doctor’s choice, you may need to return to have stiches removed, but no matter the healing process, your doctor will take into account the location of any potential scars that will appear as you heal, and will place the stiches in an unobtrusive location.

How Long Is The Facelift Road To Recovery?

After your facelift is finished, your face will be bandaged, and possibly given a drain tube, to help with any swelling. Your doctor will send you home with prescription pain medication, and give you any final instructions on taking care of your newly enhanced facial features.

It is normal to experience some pain, swelling, and even bruising in the initial recovery period post-operation. Recovery typically takes about two weeks, and after that you will be able to resume a normal level of activity; however your doctor will likely encourage you not to consider any intense activities such as exercising or any other strenuous movements.

As your final results emerge, and your skin gets back to normal, make sure to moisturize, use sunscreen, and maintain a steady weight by eating well and exercising regularly, to help your amazing results look beautiful for years to come.

Is A Facelift Right For You?

You are a great candidate for a facelift if you are someone who is ready to rediscover their beautiful facial features and shape, you are generally healthy with no pre-existing conditions that would affect your recovery from surgery or wound healing, you don’t smoke or misuse drugs, and you have a realistic expectation and understanding of what a facelift entails, and what your final outcome will likely be.

Sound too easy? Well, a facelift kind of is! No more going on hunts for the perfect serum or supplement to restore your face to it’s former glory-the answer is right here! Find a board-certified doctor you trust today, and start your facelift consultation TODAY!
