What’s a Facelift?
A facelift, also known as a rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that addresses signs of aging on the face and neck. As people age, their facial skin starts to lose collagen and elastin, and the face and neck muscles also begin to atrophy, exacerbating facial aging and the loss of jawline definition.
At VIPS, we use a comprehensive approach to face makeovers. Depending on the patient’s aesthetic needs, Dr. Vinyard will perform a cheek or a cheek and neck lift, which can also be combined with other procedures, such as a blepharoplasty, a brow lift, or a platysmaplasty. The platysma muscle is a broad sheet of muscle that extends from the collarbone up to the lower jawbone and is located in the neck. In an aging neck, the platysma muscle can become weaker, thinner, and more separated, resulting in a loss of definition and firmness in the neck area.
This can cause the appearance of neck bands or cords, resulting from the separation of the two sides of the muscle. It can also lead to the appearance of a double chin or jowls due to the sagging of the muscle and skin in the neck area.
By tightening and repositioning the platysma muscle through a platysmaplasty procedure, Dr. Vinyard restores the neck and jawline definition, resulting in a more youthful appearance! This procedure can be especially beneficial for those with excess fat or skin in the neck area.
The platysmaplasty procedure is performed under general anesthesia and the incision sites are typically hidden under the chin or behind the ear.
