Queue up the dermal filler! Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. William J. Vinyard, MD, FACS, and his team of experts can help you achieve a balanced and more youthful appearance using Juvederm and Restylane hyaluronic acid dermal fillers!

If you’re considering rejuvenating your face with a dermal filler, you need to understand the main difference between Juvederm and Restylane. So that you can get the exact results you’re looking for, whether it be a ‘Tinkerbell’ tip nonsurgical nose job or Kylie’s signature pout. And no, you do not need to wait until your collagen levels have depleted!

The nonsurgical filler market has grown, with 2.6 million people receiving hyaluronic fillers yearly. Restylane and Juvederm are two of the safest, most reliable choices available, yielding the most effective and beautiful results. At the Vinyard Institute of Plastic Surgery, our experienced Certified Aesthetic Injector will take great care in giving you the best results.

So what is the difference between the two, and does it matter which you choose? Here we break down the nitty-gritty of how Juvederm and Restylane work to reduce fine lines on the face, smooth over wrinkles, sculpt the chin and jawline, and add volume to the lips and cheeks.

Juvederm® and Restylane: Let’s Get the Basics Straight

Juvederm and Restylane are injectable dermal fillers that are injected beneath the skin’s surface to achieve your desired look. Initially, fillers were used to fill fine lines, but scientific improvements and new formulas allow us to sculpt and enhance the face like never before. They are at the forefront of facial contouring trends, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and adding volume to your lips, and restoring balance to facial features to produce a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. Restylane and Juvederm are excellent solutions if you struggle with displeasing facial features or want to enhance the features you already have.

What makes Restylane and Juvederm formulations so unique is hyalurkoknic acid, a naturally occurring molecule found within the cells in your body. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that attracts and retains moisture, giving your face a healthier, smoother, and more youthful appearance.

Restylane and Juvederm boast an impressive list of ingredients, such as lidocaine (for a more comfortable treatment) and hyaluronic acid. While their formulas are somewhat similar, the nuances are essential when choosing which hyaluronic-based filler works for you!

What Is Juvederm®?

Juvederm is made by Allergan and has an array of injectables in its line of dermal fillers aimed at contouring and smoothing areas of the face. This particular brand is the most sought-after line of dermal fillers worldwide. The line of fillers is used to reduce fine lines and increase volume, all while giving you a more refreshed, youthful appearance. Each filler is especially suited to enhancing your features to restore your confidence and self-esteem.

How Many Types of Juvederm® Injections Are There?

Juvederm hyaluronic filler collection offers five unique fillers

  • Juvederm Ultra XC for smoother, naturally defined features
  • Juvederm Ultra Plus XC creates a more dramatic effect in whichever area it is placed (mainly deep nasolabial folds or lips)
  • Juvederm Voluma XC fills out sagging or hollow cheeks as well as defines and/or builds the cheekbone and chin
  • Juvederm Vollure XC for typically used to smooth out perioral filler/smile lines and fill in nasolabial folds (the lines running from the side of the nose to the corners of the mouth)
  • Juvederm Volbella XC: perfect for reducing fine lines around the mouth and softly plumping or adding definition to the lips

What Is Restylane?

Several hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are formulated under the Restylane (made by Galderma) umbrella to treat anything from nasolabial folds to frown lines. As the first FDA-cleared filler, Restylane has grown and evolved, constantly working on giving you access to a wider variety of fillers with improved technology, which means access to a near-endless amount of aesthetic enhancement opportunities for you.

How Many Types of Restylane Dermal Fillers Are There?

Restylane’s dermal filler line now boasts seven unique formulations of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers:

  • Restylane adds fullness and smoothes facial wrinkles
  • Restylane Kysse creates a naturally plump lip shape and is known for the “soft” and “natural” feel it gives to the lips
  • Restylane Silk smoothes lines leaving a silky, naturally defined lip
  • Restylane Lyft for smoother, more youthful hands and cheek support
  • Restylane Refyne softens lines laugh lines and perioral wrinkles while maintaining facial expressions
  • Restylane Defyne contours and creates stronger, more enhanced features (such as the jawline) and softens deeper perioral lines
  • Restylane Contour fills and adds volume to cheeks

What Is the Difference Between Juvederm® and Restylane?

Dr. Vinyard and his team of experts use only the best fillers on the market to provide their patients with the best results possible. Juvederm and Restylane are equally safe, but some key differences mean that you get different results. The consistency of the injectable is one of the main differences between these hyaluronic acid fillers. Juvederm’s smoother finish quickly integrates into your tissue, while Restylane’s formulation is slightly more granular, which bonds to your tissue. The right choice is never clear-cut, and booking a consultation with an expert will provide you with the insight and clarity you need to achieve your aesthetic goals.

Which Treatment Areas Do They Target?

Gone are the days when gaunt cheeks were in vogue. Today it’s all about volume, glow, and enhancing the face to elicit a more confident you! Fillers can be used to target various areas, including the cheeks, chin, mouth, jawline, and even temples. The procedure is quick, and the results are immediate — you can even focus on multiple areas simultaneously!

Juvederm Voluma XC is useful in nonsurgical chin augmentation or if you want to restore volume to your cheeks. If plump lips are a priority for you, Juvederm Ultra XC, Juvederm Volbella, or Restylane Kysse is worth considering. Juvederm Vollure XC and Ultra Plus XC work beautifully for facial wrinkles, nasolabial folds, and fine lines.

Restylane Lyft works wonderfully to treat signs of aging on your hands. Restylane Refyne is used to smooth more moderate laugh lines. For contouring of the chin and broad definition, Restylane Defyne and Contour are solid choices.

What Results Do Restylane and Juvederm® Offer?

Juvederm and Restylane fillers use hyaluronic acid to add volume and moisture to the skin and lips. These injectable fillers reduce wrinkles, rejuvenate the dermis and create a more youthful appearance. These dermal fillers can last anywhere between 6 to 18 months depending on the product, some lasting even longer. The duration differs from person to person and also depends on the treatment location.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, fillers offer almost immediate results, so it’s not too late to get them before your next trip! However, you may require several injections in your chosen treatment area(s) to achieve the desired outcome. Therefore, your first procedure should be followed up with additional treatments for the desired results.

Is Any of the Two Treatments Painful?

Lidocaine is a local anesthetic that numbs the area; luckily for you, Juvederm and Restylane both use it in their injectable formulas. You’ll be surprised at how little pain you will feel during the treatment, and it will most likely be over before you know it!

Is Juvederm® or Restylane Better for Lips?

Juvederm Ultra XC is an excellent choice if a pillowy pout is what you’re after. In contrast, Juvederm Volbella XC is designed to define and smooth the lips for a sultry smile. Juvederm lip fillers are a popular choice for minimizing smile lines and wrinkles.

Restylane Silk is known to create silky smooth, natural lips. It works well to smooth out smoker’s lines as well. If plump, kissable lips are what you’re after, then Restylane Kysse is a beloved choice.

If you are considering a nonsurgical lip augmentation, it is best to come in with an idea of what look and feel you want to achieve – we want to help you look and feel your best. From there, one of our experienced Certified Aesthetic Injectors will be able to assist you in attaining the look you want with the product that will provide those results!

Restylane vs. Juvederm®: Which Filler Will Last Longer?

Filler lasts much longer than you think, with most fillers lasting up to 12-18 months, depending on the amount of product injected and placement. Restylane Kysse lasts up to a year, and so does Juvederm Ultra XC. However, these are not hard-and-fast rules.

Prepping the areas of the face by using appropriate skin care is always a good idea. Proper aftercare of the injection site and good skin care will increase the lifespan of the filler procedure.
