Undergo Your Arm Lift Surgery at VIPS!
The human body is constantly exposed to the wear and tear of daily life. Whether it’s from spending hours in front of a computer or experiencing weight fluctuations, our physical appearance can change significantly over time.
However, there is a solution to these frustrating changes. Plastic surgery can help restore a more youthful and toned appearance, significantly improving a patient’s self-image and confidence!
What Is Brachioplasty?
One procedure that can address sagging skin on the upper arms is an arm lift, also known as Brachioplasty. This procedure removes excess skin and fat from the upper arm area, resulting in a more toned and contoured appearance. Many patients undergo an arm lift to improve their body image and achieve a more youthful look!
Why Do Patients Undergo Arm Lift Surgery?
Brachioplasty is an excellent option for individuals who have experienced significant weight loss, aging, or weakened muscles that have caused the skin on their upper arms to sag. Often called “bat wings,” this excess skin can be frustrating and embarrassing for patients, causing them to avoid wearing sleeveless clothing or participating in activities that require them to expose their arms.
Preparing for an Arm Lift
With Your Doctor
Before undergoing an arm lift surgery, patients should have a thorough conversation with their surgeon, such as Dr. William J. Vinyard, MD, FACS. During this conversation, they will discuss the surgery details and review the patient’s medical history. They will also take pictures of the patient’s arms and ask about their expectations for the surgery. Additionally, the surgeon will discuss different types of anesthesia, such as local or general anesthesia, and determine the most appropriate option based on the extent of the surgery.
To prepare for an arm lift, patients should maintain a stable weight, stop smoking, and avoid certain anti-inflammatory medications like aspirin. Additionally, patients should make plans to receive help during their recovery, as they will not be able to perform strenuous tasks for some time.
What Does the Actual Procedure Entail?
The actual arm lift surgery will take place in an outpatient facility under anesthesia and will take between two and three hours to complete.
During the procedure, the surgeon will make an incision from the patient’s elbow along the underarm, ending near the armpit. The incision size will depend on how much skin needs to be removed.
The surgeon will then carefully remove excess skin along the incision by cutting it away and may also use liposuction to remove excess fat.
Afterward, the surgeon will tighten the underlying supportive tissue and shape the arm’s underlying tissues to achieve a toned, muscular appearance. Finally, they will close the wound with sutures.
What Does the Arm Lift Recovery Look Like?
Following the surgery, patients will slowly return to their daily routine over a period of one to two weeks. During this time, a helper in the home will be necessary to assist with basic tasks like cooking and cleaning. Patients must take post-operative pain medication and monitor the incision sight as part of their recovery time. In addition, the surgeon may ask the patient to wear a compression garment, keep their arms elevated, or monitor drainage tubes.
Patients should avoid exercise and strenuous activity for at least one month after the procedure. They should also speak with their surgeon immediately if they notice any swelling, excessive bleeding, fluid buildup, extreme numbness, or scarring on their upper arms.
When Will I See My Surgery Results?
Most patients begin to notice arm lift results directly after surgery. Then, as swelling and bruising go down, the complete results of the surgery will become obvious. Because the arm lift surgery is permanent, patients can expect the results to stay similar after surgery. Although aging may cause some sagging skin, surgery results will not be altered.
Is There Any Scarring Involved?
One common concern with the surgery recovery process is scarring. Since an upper arm lift does involve an incision, scarring is a result. However, skilled surgeons like Dr. Vinyard can minimize scarring by strategically placing the incision and using specialized techniques during the procedure. Additionally, the scars will fade over time, and the patient will be left with a more toned and youthful-looking arm.
