Labia/Vaginal Rejuvenation Surgery – Port Saint Lucie, FL
Labiaplasty is a vaginal rejuvenation surgery for women used to refresh and tighten the delicate feminine skin for cosmetic and medical reasons.
What is Labiaplasty?
You can confide in our board-certified cosmetic plastic surgeon, Dr. William Vinyard, when you have concerns about the shape and size of your labia. As a very delicate area to treat, you might have put off this conversation with a doctor because it makes you uneasy to discuss your feminine health. Rest assured that Dr. Vinyard wants to help you look and feel more confident and healthier with vaginal rejuvenation surgery. The labia (also known as the external lips of the vaginal area) may look oversized or have loosened skin simply by genetics, pregnancy, childbirth, weight loss, or a physical trauma. Labiaplasty is a surgery that decreases the size of the labia minora and/or majora for a more natural-looking vaginal appearance or for treating urogynecological problems (like incontinence) or sexual dysfunction.
Vaginal atrophy is a real health concern for women. This is a surgery that is performed for more reasons than cosmetic issues, such as:
- Vaginal canal laxity
- Dryness and irritation
- Uncomfortable sexual intercourse
- Weakness and loss of sensation within the vaginal canal
- Sexual dysfunction
- Incontinence (urge and stress incontinence)
Depending on the severity of your labia minora and/or majora, you may benefit from having this surgery by Dr. Vinyard (for the immediate and future preventive benefits). This could diminish your vaginal discomfort and irritation while boosting your confidence and sexual pleasure. Schedule a consultation at Vinyard Institute of Plastic Surgery (VIPS) in Port Saint Lucie, FL to learn more about the advantages of labiaplasty and find out if you are a candidate for the surgery. We are here to help you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is a candidate?
A labiaplasty at VIPS may be helpful for women who are worried about the shape or size of their vaginal area, which can be abnormal due to genetics, childbirth, or trauma. Abnormal vaginal lips may cause pain, discomfort, itching, or irritation during physical activities like exercise and sex. A labiaplasty may also help if you can’t wear revealing outfits (including leggings, swimsuits, or tight pants) because of the size of your vaginal lips. While a labiaplasty should not affect pregnancy, Dr. Vinyard suggests you wait until you are done having children to avoid undoing your results.
What's the technique?
Vaginal rejuvenation procedures for the labia are performed in an accredited outpatient surgical center, and you will need a family member to take you home afterward. Dr. Vinyard will discuss the details of your surgery and give you time estimates during your consultation so you can make any needed arrangements. A labiaplasty is generally performed with a trimming technique to cut away loose tissue, then the remaining skin is sutured together. Another technique is the wedge procedure that cuts away a pie-shaped piece of tissue and extra folds from the clitoral hood before suturing the tissue closed.
What can I expect?
You will require about a week to recover after your labiaplasty to allow swelling and discomfort to abate before returning to work. Dr. Vinyard recommends applying ice packs or cold compresses as needed to decrease swelling. You can not use tampons or have sexual activity for 4 – 6 weeks after your treatment. Patients typically have visible improvements in about six weeks with final results closer to six months after surgery. The results of labiaplasty usually last for a long time, but childbirth, weight fluctuations, and natural aging may alter results.
How much does a labiaplasty cost?
Vaginal rejuvenation surgery costs will be based on many factors. During your consultation with Dr. Vinyard, he will listen to your concerns and goals before creating your personalized treatment plan. Once you’ve made your choices for your vaginal rejuvenation surgery, Dr. Vinyard can estimate your costs.
We do not directly finance any procedure. You may also want to research options through your bank of choice. We also accept all major credit cards including VISA, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express.
Should I choose a plastic surgeon or OB/GYN?
When researching vaginal rejuvenation surgery, you may find that most obstetricians and gynecologists (OB/GYNs) offer labiaplasty. While many OB/GYNs are qualified to perform labia rejuvenation, the procedure is most often considered cosmetic. An OB/GYN will be able to remove excess skin from your labia; however, a plastic surgeon like Dr. Vinyard will consider the aesthetics as well. This ensures scarring is minimal, and that the final symmetry, color, and contour are natural in both appearance and feeling.
Will vaginal rejuvenation surgery cause insensitivity?
As with any surgery, there may be short-term numbness in your vaginal area after the procedure is completed. This should dissipate as the vaginal tissue and skin heal. In regard to sexual sensitivity, it is important to understand that labia rejuvenation corrects the vaginal lips and not the clitoris. A skilled plastic surgeon like Dr. Vinyard who has many years of experience performing labiaplasties will work around the clitoris so that a loss of sensitivity does not occur.
What is the recovery process like after a labiaplasty?
Before your surgery, Dr. Vinyard or a member of his team will explain what you should expect after your labiaplasty plus advice on how to keep yourself comfortable during your recovery. You will have some bruising and swelling in your vaginal area along with some discomfort immediately after your surgery. You should plan to rest for at least 5 – 7 days before returning to light activities. Dr. Vinyard will assess your progress during your follow-up appointments and let you know when you are able to resume sexual activity and exercise.
Are there nonsurgical vaginal rejuvenation treatments?
There are nonsurgical vaginal rejuvenation treatments that can improve small amounts of looseness in your vaginal area. However, vaginal rejuvenation surgery is best for significant improvements to tighten and re-shape your labia. During your consultation with Dr. Vinyard, he can review your options and make recommendations on what will meet your goals.
There’s various different symptoms that patients may be due to the aging process or childbearing. These can include vaginal dryness, pain with intercourse, stress, urinary incontinence, and vaginal laxity.
