The Vinyard Institute of Plastic Surgery has both the information and expertise to guide you on your journey! But first, it is important to understand the differences between your two primary choices for breast augmentation: fat transfer and breast implants. Therefore, we’ll answer some key questions to help ease your decision and get you one step closer to your desired aesthetic goals!

What is Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Let’s begin with the basics. Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery for women who want to increase the size, enhance the projection or improve the shape of their breasts. There may be one or more reasons for this goal. Many women want to enhance their appearance. For some, the enhancement is to build on their natural breast size. For others, it is to restore previous breast volume after changes from pregnancy, aging, or other circumstances, changed breast shape, volume, or symmetry. Whatever the reason, most women will find aesthetic improvements can also increase self-esteem, confidence, and overall satisfaction with their bodies.

When it comes to breast augmentation, you have two main options: saline implants or silicone implants. As you’ll see below, both will help you personalize your new look. In general, breast augmentation provides you with various shapes, sizes, and feel choices — you can choose a subtle approach or increase your breast size considerably. The exciting news is you can tailor your treatment plan to achieve your overall goals based on your personal preferences!

So let’s investigate the differences, but first, let’s discuss what’s involved in breast augmentation surgery.

What is a Breast Implant Procedure?

Breast implants offer you a viable and flexible approach to breast augmentation. Your treatment plan is tailored and guided by Dr. William J. Vinyard, MD, FACS, and his team of experts. Dr. Vinyard is a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon and is Fellowship-trained in breast surgery; therefore, you can be certain that your breast procedure is in capable hands.

But what does the procedure entail?? After providing a general anesthetic, Dr. Vinyard will make an incision and insert saline or silicone implants into your breasts. Of course, your overall goals may influence the techniques used and incision placement. However, you’ll always have a clear understanding of the plan and your options. But before settling on breast implants, you must determine which type of implant suits you best.

Saline or Silicone Implants?

Saline implants are empty when inserted into your breasts and filled with sterile saltwater during your procedure. They are round but have various sizes and allow for flexibility in terms of volume. They may have a less natural breast tissue feel compared to silicone but offer a solid aesthetic choice and may help you meet your aesthetic goals.

Silicone implants are inserted pre-filled with a silicone gel that produces a feel like natural breast tissue. Their shape is either round or teardrop, and, like saline implants, silicone implants offer a variety of sizes, shapes, and profiles. In addition, silicone implants are firmer than saline and hold their shape over time. Combined with their natural feel, they are a popular choice among breast augmentation patients.

Your individualized consultation will allow Dr. Vinyard and his team of experts to clearly outline the various factors involved with both types of implants and help you choose the best option for you.

Fat Transfer vs. Breast Implants: What’s the Best Option?

A fat transfer is a procedure that removes fat from other body areas and inserts it into another. Although many plastic surgeons perform fat transfers, it is not a common practice for Dr. Vinyard to suggest or perform fat transfers. In a nutshell, fat transfers can be very risky procedures. Additionally, they generally do not produce the aesthetic results most women look for when they decide to augment their breasts.

Implants have a broader audience. Generally, implants are an option for patients over 18 (22 for silicone) who are in good health and have clear and realistic expectations. The use of implants has increased in popularity over the years, and technological advancements offer women more choices in terms of size, shape, and feel. In addition, implants allow you to fully design your results. Also, they can last anywhere from 10 to 20 years, depending on the chosen implant type and the patient’s lifestyle choices.

Is Breast Augmentation Safe?

Under skilled expertise, breast augmentation is a safe medical procedure. The most important factor in the safety of cosmetic surgery is making sure to choose a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon such as Dr. Vinyard, who has extensive experience and training in breast surgery. He and his team will outline potential challenges and plans to mitigate risks. The most common breast augmentation complication is the slight risk of a rupture or a leak, although the likelihood of that event has significantly reduced over the years.

How Much Does Breast Augmentation Cost?

Pricing is dependent on many factors, as every patient’s body is different. For this reason, VIPS requires an in-person individualized consultation with Dr. Vinyard, after which his team will provide an accurate proposal and outline of costs and fees for your surgery.

Will Breast Augmentation Leave Scars?

Breast augmentation will require incisions. However, a skilled surgeon will discuss incision placement and ensure that undergarments and other clothing will hide potential scars. In general, breast augmentation scars are tiny and unnoticeable. Post-treatment care can also support the healing process of incision-based scars so that there are virtually no scars post-recovery. Following surgical instructions, ensuring enough rest, and a well-balanced diet can all be helpful in the scar healing process.
