8 Tips From a Plastic Surgeon for a Smoother Post-Op Recovery

Apr 12, 2022 | Health and Wellness

A new and improved look is just a few hours away for anyone going through plastic surgery. But getting that fresh look takes more than just good genes and a great plastic surgeon. You also need to take care of your body after the procedure.

If you’re considering plastic surgery, you’re probably wondering how the recovery process will be. “Will I be in a lot of pain?” “Will I have to take time off work?” “How long will it take before I’m looking my best?” These are all valid questions, and the answers may surprise you.

Plastic surgery is more than just a quick fix—it’s a major medical procedure that patients must take seriously. No matter what type of plastic surgery you undergo, you must ensure that your recovery is as smooth as possible. With that in mind, here are eight tips from Dr. William J. Vinyard, MD, FACS, board-certified plastic surgeon of the Vinyard Institute of Plastic Surgery (VIPS), to help make your recovery as smooth as possible.

1: Follow Pre-Op and Post-Op Instructions

Most surgical procedures have specific pre-operative and post-operative instructions. Make sure you read them thoroughly and follow them to the letter to help ensure a smooth recovery.

Pre-operative instructions may include:

  • Avoiding certain medications or supplements
  • Stopping smoking
  • Avoiding alcohol
  • Ensuring you are up to date on your vaccinations
  • Having blood work done

Post-operative instructions may include how long you should avoid strenuous activity, how often you should clean your incisions, and when you are clear to resume various personal grooming activities.

Dr. Vinyard creates customized post-operative instructions for each patient. In addition, he recommends that his patients save the instructions in a readily accessible location in case of any questions or concerns.

2: Stay Hydrated

One of the most important things you can do for a smooth recovery is to stay hydrated. Dehydration can lead to dizziness, lightheadedness, and nausea — all of which can delay your recovery. However, be sure to drink only the recommended amount post-surgically, as drinking too much water can exacerbate swelling in some cases.

If you’re not a fan of water, try drinking fruit juices or sports drinks to help you stay hydrated. Avoid caffeinated beverages and alcohol, as they can cause dehydration.

3: Wear the Right Clothes

In the days following your surgery, it’s important to wear comfortable clothes that won’t put pressure on your surgical site. Dr. Vinyard recommends loose-fitting clothes made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Avoid tight clothing, especially around the waistband, as it can cause discomfort and possibly restrict blood flow.

In some cases, a compression garment or particular type of clothing may be prescribed to wear after surgery. Follow Dr. Vinyard’s instructions on when and how to wear it.

4: Take It Easy

A smooth recovery is not a race. Don’t push yourself too hard during the days following your procedure. Rest as much as you need to, and take things slow because pushing yourself too hard can lead to discomfort, pain, and increased swelling.

If you have questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to call Dr. Vinyard and his team of experts. He will be happy to answer any questions and ensure a smooth recovery process.

5: Avoid Sun and Heat Exposure

Sun and heat exposure can delay your recovery and cause swelling or complications. Also, avoid hot baths, saunas, and steam rooms, as they can cause swelling and increase the risk of infection.

6: Eat a Healthy Diet

A healthy diet is vital for a smooth recovery. Eat plenty of lean protein, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and avoid processed foods and sugary drinks. Eating a healthy diet will help your body heal faster and reduce the risk of infection. Nutritious foods will also help you feel better physically and emotionally.

7: Manage Stress

Stress can delay your recovery. Take some time for yourself to relax and de-stress. Practice yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises, listen to calming music, or read a good book.

If stress is getting the best of you, talk to the team at Vinyard Institute of Plastic Surgery about your concerns. They may recommend a therapist or support group to help you manage your stress levels.

8: Follow Up With Dr. Vinyard

It’s essential to follow up with Dr. Vinyard in the weeks and months following your surgery. He will monitor your progress and make any necessary adjustments to your personalized post-operative instructions.

Keep your phone close for any questions or concerns you may have. Dr. Vinyard and his staff at VIPS are always happy to help!

Patience and Discipline: Key to Smoother Recovery

When recovering from plastic surgery, Dr. Vinyard says that patience and discipline are critical to a smooth and successful outcome. Take things slowly, follow the post-operative instructions provided by Dr. Vinyard, and stay in close communication with VIPS. With a little bit of patience and discipline, you can ensure your recovery will be comfortable and speedy!
